COLUMBIA, Mo. – Those enrolled in any of the four schools within the University of Missouri system can anticipate an increase in tuition fees for the 2024–2025 academic year.
The tuition for undergraduate courses will be raised by 5%, while graduate or professional course fees will see an increase between 3% and 5%. This decision was made during the University of Missouri Board of Curators meeting on Thursday morning.
University of Missouri President Mun Choi stated in a release, “We are dedicated to supporting the success of our students by providing a top-quality education at an exceptional value. Our students are graduating on time and equipped with the skills needed to kick-start successful careers. The tuition hike is necessary to uphold our commitment to delivering life-changing results and supporting economic development in Missouri.”
As per the release, the rise in tuition rates is attributed to inflation. Since 2018, the cost of a degree has decreased by 11% compared to inflation rates.
Various aspects of the universities benefit from the allocation of tuition funds, including additional course sections, advisors, faculty, tutoring support, new classrooms and laboratories, instruments, and opportunities.
The release also mentions, “Despite the tuition and fees increases, the cost of education at UM universities remains significantly below the national average. Furthermore, UM universities continue to excel in retention and graduation rates, as well as post-graduation accomplishments.”
Post-graduation success refers to the percentage of students achieving their goals within six months of graduation. In 2023, 95% of students in the University of Missouri system achieved their goals within this timeframe, surpassing the national average by over eight points.
“As curators, our decision-making regarding tuition is guided by two key principles,” said Robin Wenneker, chair of the UM Board of Curators. “Firstly, we must responsibly manage the university’s finances. Secondly, we must strive to provide an exceptional educational experience that equips our graduates for immediate and long-term success. Today’s announcement meets both these critical objectives, and we look forward to a promising 2024–2025 academic year across all UM universities.”
