MISSOURI – In 2023, Missouri experienced 259 floods, making it the 4th highest state in the country to experience flooding, according to a LendingTree Insurance study.
California, New York, and Texas were ranked as the top three states to experience the most flooding before Missouri.
Overall, the U.S. experienced nearly 29% more flooding in 2023 due to flash floods, hurricanes, and storm surges. From 2022 to 2023, the country had 6,509 flood events in 2023 compared to 5,052 in 2022.
Illinois was ranked 17th with 128 flood events in 2023, according to the study.
Last year was the 3rd most expensive year for flood damages in the U.S., totaling $9.3 billion in damages.
As spring and summer storms increase, homeowners should consider getting flood insurance early and making home renovations to prevent or reduce potential damage. Renovations could include installing wind-resistant windows and impact-resistant roofing.
