The St. Charles City-County Library Board has decided to postpone the vote that will determine the fate of three local libraries.
Protesters gathered outside the recently renovated Spencer Road library branch on Tuesday night.
Holding signs that read “Save our Libraries,” the demonstrators urged officials at the St. Charles City-County Library district to reconsider their plan proposed in May.
Following community backlash, the library board has decided to delay any decision regarding the closure of branches.
At a closed work session on June 6, the board discussed holding listening sessions for community feedback. Stacia Alavarez, President of the Board of Trustees, mentioned that these listening sessions are yet to be scheduled but are hoped to start in July.
The board aims to make an informed decision that ensures the financial future of the Library District by engaging with the community.
Demonstrators expressed their eagerness to have their voices heard but remained cautious about the outcome of the listening sessions.
Library leadership cites financial difficulties as the reason behind the proposed branch closures, with plans to eventually close more medium-sized locations in the future.
In response to the proposed closures, many residents have emphasized the importance of keeping their local libraries open, highlighting the vital role these libraries play in the community.
The board will not make any final decisions regarding branch closures at the upcoming board meeting on June 18. The budget goes into effect on July 1, but adjustments can be made following the listening sessions.
