The St. Louis Zoo is grieving the loss of another one of its animals.
Little Joe, a western lowland gorilla, passed away overnight on May 4 due to a heart attack. He was undergoing treatment for heart disease, as outlined in a Facebook post by the Zoo. According to the zoo’s video surveillance, it was suggested in the post that he died peacefully in his sleep. He was 26 years old.
Joe was often seen in public viewing areas, observing people, or spending time with his long-time gorilla companion, Bakari.
About seven months ago, Rani, a 27-year-old Asian elephant, lost her life at the zoo after a dog caused distress for the animal by roaming free. A month later in November, Donna, a 52-year-old Asian elephant, passed away due to deteriorating health.
