For Evyn Humphrey, faith has played a key role in changing the course of her life.
Always a talented student-athlete, Humphrey said that gaining the necessary confidence through a renewed sense of faith helped her achieve the things she has sought in the classroom and in a variety of athletic arenas.
“My faith has a huge impact on every part of my life, and I would not be where I am today without Christ,” Humphrey said. “Before I decided to take steps to be active in my faith, I was a different person and athlete. While my main focus has always been on my education, I did not have the huge amount of confidence and strength that I have now.”
Her education has included a 4.6 grade point average, a No. 12 class ranking while earning Summa Cum Laude honors, and she is a member of the school’s National Honors Society. Additionally, Humphrey is a Golden Helmet Recipient; honor roll; AP scholar ACT 30 and above club; 4.0 award; National Society of High School Scholars; academic all-conference
Humphrey said that her renewed faith led to a specific, crystalizing moment which has been a key to her successes.
“It was not until I started to read my Bible again that I realized I had a meaningful purpose and I had much to seek after and to look forward to,” Humphrey said. “The Word is what allows me to find courage and have endurance in everything I pursue daily, especially running.”
During her senior year, Humphrey ran her way to the GAC South individual cross country championship as a team captain. She was also all-state in Class 5, the team’s most valuable runner. In track and Field: Humphrey was first-team all-conference, first-team all-district, and a state qualifier.
Francis Howell girls track coach Dressel Huston said that Humphrey’s work on the track goes well beyond how fast she can run.
“She brings a warrior spirit to our team every day,” Huston said. “Evyn has the intangibles (of) a successful person in life and in her sport. She is a hard worker, a great listener, a supportive teammate, and she has a great desire to win. These valuable qualities are foundational to our team’s goal of being a champion.”
Humphrey said that she feels her work ethic in sports carries into academics and vice versa. She added that being involved in athletics has made her a well-rounded individual and has allowed her to meet people outside of school with common interests.
Those attributes should serve her well as she heads off to Hillsdale College in south-central Michigan. Humphrey said that she aims to earn a degree in biology before doing post-graduate work.
Humphrey, is also involved in club volleyball, choir, Bible study, and youth group; and volunteers for the Humane Society of Missouri, the Special Olympics of Missouri; the Salvation Army, and Hearts and Hope for Uganda.
She said that everything she does revolves around making her a better person and someone who will be readily able to meet people like her and share her interests.
She said that she can’t help but be filled with confidence about her future because of the work she has put in on a physical, mental, and spiritual level.
“My work ethic in sports carries into my academics and vice versa,” Humphrey said. “Being involved in athletics has made me a well-rounded individual and has allowed me to meet people outside of my school with common interests.”
