ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Three local libraries that were previously at risk of closing in St. Charles County will remain open as officials have decided to end discussions about closing them.
Last month, the St. Charles City-County Library Board of Trustees unanimously voted to indefinitely table a proposal that would have led to the closure of three county libraries: McClay Library in St. Charles, Kisker Library near Weldon Springs, and Deer Run Library in O’Fallon.
Concerns about inflation, changing patron preferences, and increased costs related to electronic books had contributed to a projected budget shortfall, prompting talks of closure. However, after receiving extensive feedback from the community, the board made the decision to cease discussions about closing the libraries and instead focus on financial stability and community engagement efforts.
The St. Charles City-County Library Board of Trustees released a statement on Friday, stating…
“We appreciate all those who have participated in meetings, shared stories about the library, expressed concerns, and offered solutions as we work towards a sustainable future for the Library. Based on community input, the Board voted in June to permanently end consideration of the initial proposal to close three library branches.”
The board also mentioned plans to create a new survey to gather information that will aid in the long-term financial stability of the library district.
