It was confirmed by his family to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Ted Drewes Jr., the beloved businessman who expanded his father’s frozen custard business and became a St. Louis icon, passed away earlier this week.
On August 26, at the age of 96, Drewes Jr. passed away, as confirmed by his family.
In 1929, Ted Drewes Sr. opened his first frozen custard shop in St. Petersburg, Florida. The following year, he opened the first St. Louis shop near the intersection of Natural Bridge Road and Goodfellow Avenue.
By 1958, the Florida and Natural Bridge locations had closed. The South Grand and Chippewa locations continue to operate, with the Chippewa location serving as the company headquarters.
Among his accomplishments, Drewes Jr. enlarged the Chippewa location to accommodate more customers and took over the Christmas tree sales in the Chippewa parking lot in 1954 after a business partner backed out.
