In the 800 block of Barbara Place in O’Fallon, Missouri, a delivery driver mistakenly delivered an order to the wrong address and attempted to retrieve it, leading to a shot being fired just before 12:30 a.m. on July 7.
The homeowner, Dwayne Tyreese Jones, confronted the driver, resulting in a gunshot and the victim being found on Jones’ driveway. Emergency responders provided life-saving measures before transporting the driver to the hospital.
Prosecuting attorney Joe McCulloch stated, “He’s still in the hospital; he’s gone through a number of surgeries already and he’s still in very, very critical condition… In this situation, I don’t think the driver did anything to warrant this kind of action.”
Doordash, a popular food delivery service in St. Charles County, has implemented measures to ensure the safety of their drivers, including a partnership with ADT for access to emergency services. However, incidents like this raise concerns about the need for enhanced protection for drivers.
One downtown St. Charles shop owner expressed concern, stating, “If I was a Doordash driver, this would scare me too… it makes me concerned for the people I know who do Doordash and their safety.”
Emily Hartig of Riverside Sweets and others utilize Doordash for their businesses, but acknowledge the potential safety risks. Some, like Chip Bates of The Main House, recognize the importance of the service despite its challenges.
The St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Jones with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Due to his prior criminal record, he remains in custody without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 17.
