The St. Louis Cardinals have achieved their first sweep of the 2024 season against the Baltimore Orioles. This is significant as the Orioles had a streak of 106 consecutive regular-season series without being swept, which has now come to an end.
The Cardinals completed two rain-delayed games on Wednesday, one of which stretched overnight from Tuesday into the morning, and a series finale that followed another rain delay in the afternoon.
The final scores were Cardinals 3, Orioles 1 in the early game, and Cardinals 5, Orioles 4 in the late game. Nolan Gorman’s go-ahead home run led to a victory in the morning, while Brendan Donovan’s go-ahead double helped the Cardinals complete a comeback in the afternoon. Rookie shortstop Masyn Winn had five hits in the series, including a home run, extending his season-best hitting streak to 13 games.
With this sweep, St. Louis has now won eight of its last 10 games and improved to a record of 23-26 in the regular season. The Orioles, who were 29-15 before visiting Busch Stadium, had their impressive streak broken by the Cardinals.
