ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The cleanup process is ongoing following the widespread flash flooding on Tuesday, but some are still unable to return to their homes.
One bridge off of Valley Road in St. Charles County was washed away by the floods.
This bridge is crucial for connecting Austin and Rebekah Davis to their home. They mentioned that this isn’t the first time a bridge has been destroyed by floods.
This has become a common sight for Austin and Rebekah over the past two years.
“The longer I look at it, the angrier I get,” Austin said.
The newlyweds recently purchased their first home in St. Charles County without knowing the challenges they would face.
This bridge, or what’s left of it, was swept away during Tuesday’s flooding. They revealed that this has happened around a dozen times now, leading them to temporarily live with Rebekah’s parents.
“It’s heartbreaking. You just want to go home, and you can’t,” Rebekah expressed. “We’re 26 years old. We’re trying to have a family, and I can’t even bring a child home. It’s really heartbreaking.”
They mentioned that flooding was not a concern when they bought the home initially. However, something changed over time.
They noticed that the creek is now taking in more water than before. They reached out to the county for answers, feeling desperate and not alone in their struggle.
“Every time I come here and see the bridge, and the house I can’t get to, it feels hopeless,” Austin admitted. “I tried to fix it myself. But this is just too much for one man to try to fix.”
The Davisons are determined to resolve this issue and sell their home. They cherish their time in St. Charles County but have accumulated too many negative memories.
They are still hopeful that the county can assist in resolving this problem and help them move forward.
“Just to realize that this is an issue and people are being displaced from their homes, and it’s not fair and it’s not right. It needs to be addressed,” Rebekah added.
