ST. CHARLES, Mo. – During hot and humid weather like this, it’s important to think about the area utility workers, roofers, and those who work outdoors. The extreme heat can really impact their health and well-being.
“We have to keep an eye on each other. When you’re out here working alongside other employees, it’s crucial to ensure everyone stays coherent, focused, and doesn’t overheat,” said Carl Nolde, St. Charles County Highway Operations Manager. “We rotate positions to manage the hotter jobs and take care of each other.”
It’s essential for workers to stay cool while working with 250-degree asphalt in 95-degree heat, as it can be both vital and lifesaving.
“We are exposed to these conditions every day, so we adapt to it, but we make sure to pack ice water and prioritize hydration for our team,” Nolde explained. “The key is to stay hydrated and avoid going in and out of air conditioning frequently, as it can be tough on your body.”
Providing shade on equipment helps workers stay out of the direct sun and maintain their well-being while working in extreme heat.
