Utility bills in St. Louis could see an increase next year as Missouri American Water and Ameren Missouri have submitted requests to increase their base rates to fund infrastructure upgrades and improve long-term services. If approved, the rate hikes could raise average bills by nearly $20 each month for both providers.
The requests have been filed with the Missouri Public Service Commission, which has 11 months to make a decision. This process involves thorough reviews, public hearings, and consultations with stakeholders.
Missouri American Water
Missouri American Water projects an increase of around $18 per month for the average residential customer’s water bill if the proposed rates are approved, as part of ongoing investments totaling $1.5 billion through May 2026. Projects include replacing aging water and wastewater pipes and adding a new water supply source in St. Charles County.
For customers experiencing financial difficulties, Missouri American Water offers assistance programs such as H2O Help to Others, payment plans, and budget billing.
Ameren Missouri
Ameren Missouri projects a $17 monthly increase in the average residential customer’s electric bill if the proposed rates are approved, to support cleaner electricity and grid improvements. Investments include power line upgrades, new substations, and enhancements to utility poles for better resilience against severe weather.
Ameren Missouri also offers assistance programs, flexible payment options, and connections to LIHEAP for customers in need of bill payment support.
