ST. LOUIS – Missouri residents who filled up their gas tanks last year and kept their receipts may be eligible for a refund.
Drivers in Missouri now have the chance to apply for a partial refund on the gas tax increase from last year. To claim the refund, individuals must complete a 4923-H form.
The Missouri Department of Revenue has launched an online portal for refund applications related to last year’s 2.5-cent tax increase per gallon. This opportunity allows people to potentially get money back on gas purchases made between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024.
Refund claims can be submitted until Sept. 30, 2024. Applicants must have purchased gas for vehicles weighing less than 26,000 pounds and used those vehicles for highway use, as specified in the Missouri DOR application form.
In addition to meeting these requirements, Missouri DOR will ask applicants to provide the following information when submitting a refund claim:
- Vehicle identification number of the motor vehicle where the fuel was delivered
- Date of sale
- Name and address of the buyer
- Name and address of the seller
- Number of gallons purchased
- Number of gallons purchased with Missouri fuel tax charged separately
Missouri increased the state’s motor fuel tax by 2.5 cents through 2025 following a law authorized by Gov. Mike Parson in 2021. These tax increases are aimed at funding improvements for roads and bridges in the state.
