ST. LOUIS – Sunday marks a significant change in the nation’s political scene as President Joe Biden announces his decision not to seek reelection, making him the first sitting commander-in-chief in almost 60 years to do so. In two statements, President Biden expressed his intention to step out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee.
Reactions from both Democrats and Republicans came quickly, with Democrats applauding Biden’s decision and Republicans calling for his resignation from office.
Below are responses from elected officials in Missouri and Illinois.
During these crucial times of MAGA extremism and fascism threatening progress, our primary focus should be on defeating Trump in November. I commend President Biden for prioritizing the nation’s needs, a decision that was undoubtedly difficult. Throughout his transformative presidency, I have advocated for a progressive agenda that benefits people in St. Louis and beyond. From defeating Trump to enacting the American Rescue Plan, forgiving student debt, and leading climate investments with the Inflation Reduction Act, President Biden has made significant strides. His endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination for President further solidifies his commitment to advancing a progressive agenda.
The majority of voters support an agenda that values the humanity of all individuals globally, advocates for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the mistreatment of Palestinians, and fights for issues like student debt cancellation, livable wages, affordable housing, and reproductive freedom. By passing the torch to a new generation, Biden has shown that he hears the voices of millions of voters. I fully endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President as she carries forward this legacy to defeat Trump in November.
Rep. Cori Bush (D-Missouri 1st)
President Joe Biden dedicated his life to serving this nation, and we are all better for it. His accomplished presidency led us through a pandemic recovery, economic prosperity, and bipartisan legislation to rebuild infrastructure. More importantly, President Biden restored dignity to the Oval Office, embodying the statesmanship and honor his years of service have exemplified.
As we appreciate President Biden’s accomplishments, we must also acknowledge the threat posed by a potential Trump presidency. Trump’s history of felonies, sexual assault allegations, and divisive policies should not be taken lightly. I will work tirelessly to ensure that Trump does not win in November.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker
We express our deep gratitude to President Joe Biden for his unwavering dedication to the nation. His leadership navigated us through challenging times, and his legacy of empathy, resilience, and commitment to the American people will have a lasting impact.
As we face a critical moment in our democracy, we must stand against the regressive agenda of a potential Trump-Vance presidency. The Democratic Party of Illinois is committed to mobilizing voters towards a stronger, more equitable nation. Thank you, President Biden, for your service, and we are prepared to confront the challenges ahead with unity and resolve.
Lisa Hernandez, Democratic Party of Illinois chairwoman
Throughout his career, Joe Biden prioritized the country’s interests. His presidency brought accomplishments in economic growth, pandemic recovery, and restoring American values. Now, the Democratic Party must unite behind a candidate who can defeat Trump and continue progress in America.
U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Illinois)
Joe Biden’s leadership and dedication to working Americans have made a significant impact. From his role in passing meaningful legislation to guiding the nation through challenging times, Biden has always put the country first. We thank him for his leadership and continue the goal of defeating Trump in November.
U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois)
The Republican Party displays unity and strength behind President Trump’s candidacy, contrasting the Democrats’ confusion. The Missouri Republican Party stands united in supporting Trump’s leadership and policies for a prosperous and secure America.
This election season, the Missouri Republican Party is prepared to engage with voters across the state to promote a vision of a stronger America. Our commitment to these values will lead us to victory in November, reelecting President Trump.
Nick Myers, Chairman of the Missouri Republican Party
Joe Biden’s time in office has been marked by inflation, foreign policy challenges, and an expanding administrative state. Americans seek new leadership, and it is time for a change. Regardless of the Democratic nominee, we must prevent another term of destructive chaos and corruption under Trump’s leadership.
U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri)
President Biden’s decision to step out of the campaign highlights the need for real leadership and change. The American people are ready to move forward and look for decisive leadership. President Trump remains the favorite heading into November, regardless of the Democrats’ nominee.
Rep. Mike Bost (R-Illinois 12th)
