ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – As the school year approaches, students in several local districts are getting ready to head back to class and will need school supplies.
The tax-free weekend is the perfect opportunity for parents and students to save on essential items for the upcoming school year.
This year, the tax-free weekend will take place from Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 4, allowing families to stock up on supplies.
In Missouri, the tax-free exemption includes clothes and shoes with a taxable value under $100, school supplies totaling up to $50 per purchase, and computers priced under $1,500.
The sales tax holiday applies to both state and local sales taxes. A state law passed last year prevents cities, counties, and special tax districts from charging local sales tax on qualifying items.
While inflation may impact back-to-school shopping, the National Retail Federation estimates that the average U.S. household will spend around $875 on school supplies this year, slightly lower than the previous year.
College students are anticipated to spend nearly $1,400, which is comparable to last year’s spending.
You can view a complete list of qualifying items on the Missouri Department of Revenue website under the taxation tab.
Although Illinois will not have a tax holiday this year, residents can still take advantage of Missouri’s sales tax holiday by exploring stores in South County Center, West County Center, and Mid Rivers Mall, all of which are offering special promotions.
