ST. LOUIS — Hurricane season begins on June 1st and continues until November 30th, coinciding with the peak of summer vacation.
While these storms may not directly impact St. Louis residents at home, they can affect travel destinations. Shanna Brown of Chillicothe, Missouri, is heading to Cancun for a wedding at the start of the season, ensuring trip insurance due to past hurricane impacts.
In 2022, Hurricane Ian caused devastation in southwest Florida, affecting areas like Fort Myers, Sanibel Island, and Captiva Island. The aftermath of these hurricanes still influences decision-making as some destinations continue to rebuild.
NOAA is forecasting 17 to 25 named storms this season, with 8–13 potentially becoming hurricanes, including 4–7 major hurricanes of category 3 strength or higher.
While this forecast is not surprising to Brown, it can impact summer and fall travel plans for some, while others are willing to take the risk.
“I think when people make up their minds to go on a trip, they’re just going to go. They’re going to risk it,” said Marko Oroz, who was also traveling to Cancun.
