ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – Almost 90 days after a warrant was issued for his arrest by the St. Charles County Circuit Court, an O’Fallon, Missouri man has been accused of defrauding a disabled elderly woman of tens of thousands of dollars.
As per a probable cause statement filed by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), James D. Hughes, 59, took advantage of the victim’s medical and psychological issues between July 2022 and January 2023. He convinced her to sell her home, put the money in a revocable trust, and appoint him as the trustee of the funds.
Hughes moved the funds from the trust to his own account and used the money for his personal gain, according to DHSS.
On May 9, 2024, the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Hughes with two counts of stealing – $750 or more and two counts of stealing – $25,000 or more.
