ST. LOUIS – Topps, a sports trading card manufacturer, is on a nationwide tour to honor the Negro Leagues with new cards. The latest stop on the tour was in St. Louis.
A new 24-foot baseball card of Satchel Paige was revealed at Busch Stadium on Friday.
“We’re partnering with Fanatics Collectibles on this incredible project. Each week, we unveil a new card at a new location leading up to the Rickwood Game, celebrating the Negro Leagues. We’re thrilled to be here,” said Sami Polanco, brand marketing and partnerships manager at FOX Sports.
To generate excitement for the St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants game on June 20 at Rickwood Field, the oldest professional ballpark in the U.S., Topps launched a six-city tour to showcase the Negro League Baseball Legends cards.
Many fans enjoyed posing for photos in front of the painting created by artist Micah Johnson using only his fingers, charcoal sticks, an eraser, and a paint roller. The six-card collection includes legends like Satchel Paige, John Gibson, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Larry Doby, and Monte Irvin.
“We just received news from our ticket sales team at the St. Louis Cardinals that they will be hosting viewing parties here for those who can’t attend in person,” Polanco added.
The Satchel Paige card is now available on the Topps website, with a new card being released weekly until the full collection of six cards launches on June 20. The games can be watched on FOX Sports.
