ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – A St. Charles County police officer is going beyond his regular duties to help some reptiles in need.
Drivers are frequently reminded to be cautious of our slow-moving friends. Turtles are most active during this time of year.
Officer Schneiderjohn often patrols north St. Charles County. During his patrols, he encounters speeders, vehicles that have broken down, and lately, turtles.
“We’ve seen about three turtles up there and we had to stop. It bothers me when we’re driving and see turtles either hit or in danger of being hit. It’s easy for us to stop and move them out of harm’s way,” he explained.
Turtles are particularly active during the spring and early summer months as they cross roads in search of food and mates.
“Whenever I notice a turtle on the road, I always turn on my lights because it signals to other drivers that they need to slow down or stop, especially if the turtle is in the middle of the road,” Officer Schneiderjohn added.
Other officers have jokingly given him a new nickname, “the turtle whisperer.”
“I don’t mind that title. I’m happy to be here, doing what I can to help,” Officer Schneiderjohn remarked.
