ST. CHARLES, Mo. – A 27-year-old woman who was shot in the Ameristar Casino parking garage in St. Charles survived the incident but will face lasting injuries that will change her life forever.
“It’s going to be a long road not only physically but also emotionally and mentally for her,” stated her attorney Grant Boyd.
The gunshot wound went through her shoulder and neck, resulting in her needing a permanent tracheostomy and developing PTSD.
“Fortunately, with the help of bystanders, emergency medical personnel, and the hospital, her life was saved,” Boyd explained.
Boyd has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the victim, identified as Jane Doe, against the alleged shooter, her boyfriend Calvin Koong. The lawsuit accuses Koong of repeated physical assaults and battery on the victim, leading to severe physical injuries, disfigurement, and emotional trauma.
In criminal court, Koong faces charges of first-degree domestic assault, armed criminal action, and kidnapping due to allegations that he prevented the victim from leaving the car during the assault.
Koong has hired attorney Scott Rosenblum to defend him in criminal court.
“Every story has two sides,” Rosenblum commented.
Koong’s preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 6.
“We are optimistic that he made bail and are preparing a strong defense based on the evidence,” Rosenblum added.
A judge has frozen Koong’s assets to ensure he can compensate the victim if the lawsuit is lost.
“Such behavior will have consequences beyond just criminal charges, and we will seek all available assets to provide restitution to the victim,” Boyd stated.
Once served with the lawsuit, Koong will have 30 days to respond in court.
